Four new AIS base stations established in Svalbard

The Norwegian Coastal Administration (NCA) has, in cooperation with Kongsberg Seatex, extended the AIS network in Svalbard with four new AIS base stations. With new base stations in operation, the NCA will receive real-time AIS data of seagoing traffic in the remote waters of Spitsbergen, including the treacherous Hinlopen strait.

Due to maintenance work at Måløy bridge (Måløybrua) from 31 July to 31 December 2020, the vertical clearance in the eastern fairway will be reduced from 41 to 34 metres.

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration will carry out necessary maintenance on the Måløy bridge (Måløybrua) from 31 July 2020 to September 2021. The sailing draft will periodically be lower than normal and the sailing pattern must therefore be temporarily changed.

Improved risk assesments in the Arctic

Sailing and operating in Arctic waters poses more risks than in other regions. Untill now, operators have lacked a proper common tool for risk assessments that includes these specific Arctic Risk Influencing Factors (ARIFs). The Norwegian Coastal Administration has lead an international cooperation to develop such a tool - a tool that will increase maritime safety in the Arctic Region.
