New AI monitoring tool introduced in the VTS service

The Norwegian Coastal Administration will soon introduce a new digital decision support tool based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms that provides more automated monitoring of ship traffic. The tool gives VTS centres a better basis for earlier detection of unwanted and critical traffic situations.

Fees for 2021 have increased to meet the expected increase in prices and wages by 2.1 per cent on average in 2021. The Norwegian government will finance the loss in income caused by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021.

The NCA will build the world's first ship tunnel

Following the government's budget negotiations, funds have been set aside for the start-up of the Stad Ship Tunnel in 2021. The project is now estimated to cost NOK 3.45 billion.

Improved risk assesments in the Arctic

Sailing and operating in Arctic waters poses more risks than in other regions. Untill now, operators have lacked a proper common tool for risk assessments that includes these specific Arctic Risk Influencing Factors (ARIFs). The Norwegian Coastal Administration has lead an international cooperation to develop such a tool - a tool that will increase maritime safety in the Arctic Region.

112 new digital routes and waypoints are now available for vessels planning port calls from Haugesund to Stad in Western Norway. Routeinfo.no provides quality-assured sailing routes and route information for mariners.

Fees for 2020: Reduction in Safety Fees and increase in Pilotage Fee

The Safety Fees are reduced by 2.7 per cent on average. The Pilotage Service Fee and Pilotage Readiness Fee are increased by 4.3 per cent, while the Pilot Exemption Certificate Fee is increased by 2.3 per cent.

New AIS basestations strengthen maritime traffic monitoring on Svalbard

On September 13, 2019, the Norwegian Coastal Administration deployed a new AIS (Automatic Identification System) basestation on the island of Prins Karls Forland, west of Spitsbergen. This basestation is powered by solar and wind energy, and is the first of its kind in an area without infrastructure.

Digital Route Service is available from Sandefjord to Haugesund

Russian nuclear power plant without fuel to be transported along the Norwegian coastline

The transport of the Russian floating nuclear power plant "Akademik Lomonosov" started Friday the 27th of April from St. Petersburg heading to Murmansk. The nuclear power plant will not have nuclear fuel on board during transport, but the Norwegian Coastal Administration and the Norwegian Radiation Protection Agency will nevertheless follow the transport closely along the Norwegian coast.

Introducing New Regulations for Pilot Bookings

The NCA has established a web camera that transmits live images from Saltstraumen – one of the strongest maelstroms in the world. Live video transmission is an additional service to the automated current forecast, established in September 2017.

The fees for 2018 set by the Ministry of Transport and Communications, are noticeably lower than 2017. For 2018, safety fees are reduced by 8.5 per cent on average and the pilot readiness fee is increased by 1.9 per cent on average.

Automated control of vessels using Pilot Exemption Certificates

In November, the Norwegian Coastal Administration introduced a digital tool that improves and automates the process of uncovering compulsory pilotage violations. Monitoring compulsory pilotage, including the Pilot Exemption Certificate (PEC) scheme, helps ensure a high degree of safety along the coast.

Ship tunnel project ready for next phase

The Ministry of Transport and Communications has received the result of the extensive work done by the Norwegian Coastal Administration (NCA) as commissioned by the Ministry in 2015. The delivery includes a technical pre-project, approved regulatory plans with impact assessment, and a central project management document. Thus, the project is ready for quality assurance phase 2 (KS 2)

It is now formally stated that Stad Ship Tunnel is part of the Norwegian National Transport Plan (NTP) in the period of 2018 to 2029. This paves the way for the Norwegian Coastal Administration efforts to build the world's first full-scale ship tunnel.
