The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea

Give way rules for motorboats

  1. Keep to the right of the approaching boat.
  2. Give way to boats from starboard side.
  3. Motorboats give way to sailing boats.

Give way rules between sailing boats

  1. Sailing boats with the wind coming from port side give way to sailing boats with the wind coming from starboard.
  2. Windward boats give way to leeward boats.

Other give way rules

  1. Overtaking boats give way to boats being overtaken.
  2. Keep a safe distance from commercial traffic.
  3. Keep to starboard in narrow lanes.
  4. Keep a safe distance from boats that are unable to manoeuvre normally.
