The Norwegian Coastal Administration has signed a contract with AF Decom AS for the demolition of 18 buildings in and around the construction areas for the Stad Ship Tunnel. The work is scheduled to begin in mid-October and be completed by the end of the year.

The demolition is part of the preparatory work ahead of construction of the Stad Ship Tunnel. Two buildings will be demolished at Eidsstranda in Moldefjorden, 15 in Kjøde and one at Sneide/Kjøde.

“This will be some of the first visible construction activity in the area. The demolition is necessary to prepare the sites before the main construction work on the Stad Ship Tunnel begins,” says Project Manager Jarle Strand.

The demolition work is scheduled to start in mid-October and be completed by the end of the year. There will be considerable construction activity in Kjøde in particular during this period.

“We will carry out the work safely and in an orderly manner, and keep local residents well informed about the activities as the work progresses,” says Strand.

AF Decom awarded demolition contract

Five suppliers submitted bids in the tender competition. One of the bids was rejected. AF Decom AS was awarded the contract following an overall assessment of price, climate and environmental considerations, and sustainability.

AF Decom submitted the lowest bid and also scored highest on climate and environmental measures.

“We received consistently strong bids and there was good competition. It is important to us that the work is carried out efficiently and that we facilitate as much reuse and recycling of materials as possible,” says Strand.

Work begins on 12 kilometres of water pipelines

The Norwegian Coastal Administration has also signed a contract with Telemark Seaworx AS for the installation of approximately 12 kilometres of subsea pipelines to supply water to the portal areas of the Stad Ship Tunnel.

The pipelines will run from Åheim to the portal area in Kjøde and from Moldestad in Moldefjorden to the southern portal area at Eidsstranda. The project will also include several landfall points and valve houses along the routes.

The project has been planned in cooperation with Stad Municipality and Vanylven Municipality, which are contributing to its financing. The pipelines will provide water to the tunnel portal areas, while also enabling the municipalities to connect areas that currently do not have access to a municipal water supply.

“This is a good example of how the construction of the Stad Ship Tunnel can provide lasting benefits beyond the tunnel project itself. Once the tunnel has been completed, the plan is to extend the water pipeline through the tunnel and connect the water supply systems on either side. This will allow the water supply systems in Stad and Vanylven to serve as backup for each other,” says Strand.

Work on the water pipelines will begin in October and is scheduled for completion by April 2027.

Both the demolition work and the installation of the water pipelines are preparatory works being carried out by the Norwegian Coastal Administration under separate contracts, independently of the main contract for the Stad Ship Tunnel.

The main contract (design-and-build contract) has been awarded to AF Gruppen, and construction of the ship tunnel itself is scheduled to begin in January 2027.
